Following a Masters Degree from Wageningen University (cum laude) qualified as a Chartered Engineer in Forest Ecology, Social Psychology and Management, held a number of project and program management posts in the private sector before transferring to Director in the City of Breda (1994). In 2000 he was appointed as Chief Executive/City Manager to the City of Roosendaal.

For almost three decades he works in the very heart of the public domain – at the interfaces between politicians, mayor and aldermen, experts and advisers, media, citizens and companies – on local and regional level as manager and advisor. He made a significant contribution to the professional network for risk management and governance (PRIMO) in the Netherlands as well as in Europe (now as President) and was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Federation of Local Authority Chief Executives (UDITE).
